Jenny Smith MRes Candidate

My research interests have developed through my experiences working on laboratory and field research projects focused on marine mammal behaviour and social-structure. As a natural progression of my desire to contribute to marine wildlife conservation, I have found myself drawn to issues concerning commercial fishing management—namely those of marine mammal bycatch. My academic and career goals focus on contributing to bycatch mitigation efforts in Western Australia through policy review and directed research.

Title: A Comparative Review of Australian and American Bycatch Management in Remotely Operating Commercial Fisheries

My research focuses on the issue of bycatch in commercial fisheries occupying waters in remote regions of Australia and the United States of America. I will be reviewing bycatch practical management, including methods for monitoring and mitigation, in a case-study fishery from each country. The goal of which is to highlight strategies for “best-practice management” of marine mammal bycatch in remotely operating commercial fisheries in developed countries. I will also be conducting a policy review as a means to reveal discrepancies in each country’s respective approach to legislating on fisheries bycatch and marine mammal conservation.
