Today, we headed south from Keauhou and at 8 am when we hit Miloli’i, approximately 7 miles
south of Kauhako Bay.
It was at this point that we came across a group of 8 dolphins
heading slowly north. We photo-identified the group and the proceeded to follow them.
As they made their way towards Kauhako Bay a boat stopped to watch the dolphins and
the passengers took pictures, the boat stayed for approximately 5 minutes. The group
of dolphins then passed Kauhako Bay and Honaunau Bay just brushing the entrances
of each, still travelling very slowly.
When the group of dolphins were approximately 1 mile from the entrance to Kealakekua Bay, a rental boat intercepted them and at the same time the sea state increased and we lost sight of the group. After ten minutes of trying to relocate the group we terminated the focal follow. We followed the group for 2.5 hours.
